Bogeyman Urban Legends
“Don’t act up or the Bogeyman will get you.”
Raise your hand if you’ve ever said that line to your kids (or anyone’s kids for that matter.) Or perhaps you heard that phrase as a child and remember the scary feeling it caused. Well, fear no more because we’re debunking Bogeyman Urban Legends in this post.
Many children fear the elusive Bogeyman under the bed or in the closet. Bogeyman urban legends have taken on many forms over the years. But, his end goal is always the same – to scare children into behaving at any cost.
This dark and horrific creature has been known to make appearances in horror films and haunted attractions, making his existence still relevant many centuries after his creation.
What are Bogeyman Urban Legends?
Over the years, the Bogeyman has been described in many different ways. He can take on the form of whatever a person fears, which is why people describe him very differently. In America, Bogeyman urban legends describe him as a scary figure with no consistent shape or form. He hides under the bed, in dark corners, or in a child’s closet waiting for his prey.
In other countries, he’s a man who wears all black with a sack and kidnaps bad children to either keep them or eat them. (That belief alone is enough to make a child never want to be bad or mischievous!)
Regardless of the manner in which you think of this guy, it is clear that he is universally feared by all for one reason or another. Many adults probably have their own stories of how the Bogeyman has shown up in their lives at one time or another. It’s not an experience that most people just forget about.
Many cultures claim the bogeyman has sharp teeth and claws and have the traits of something conjured from a horrible place. This monstrous creature’s appearance varies from culture to culture and person to person with no definitive look.
He’s just the epitome of terror. However you picture him, he’s always a horrific being you wouldn’t want to run into in a dark corner (because if you do, you probably won’t live to tell the tale.)
Where Does the Bogeyman Come From?
Bogeyman urban legends can be traced back as early as the 1500s, maybe even earlier. But it’s pretty impossible to trace the Bogeyman’s actual origins. Back then, Bogeyman was a term for the devil. The word itself is thought to be derived from the word “bogge” which means hobgoblin in Middle English.
In many Latin countries, the Bogeyman was portrayed as a man who catches naughty children and puts them in a sack on his back. In Egypt, he was portrayed as a night creature dressed in all black. The idea that the Bogeyman hides under beds and in closets comes from Germany and Denmark. It is there that they believed he was a supernatural monster who hides in the dark.
Could You Face the Bogeyman?
It’s a unique, fun experience that will really get you thinking while fearing this mythical creature. Depending on your level of fear, you’ll likely be pretty scared, but we promise a good time. This is our newest game in the Poconos. The game was born in our Red Bank Location a few years back and had massive success. But, the time had come to move to a new area and scare new people.

History
The idea came to Tone Purzycki back in 2011 after he wrote a screenplay that developed into a live-streaming game. The game revolved around an actor trapped in a situation and the audience had to solve puzzles to figure out where he was trapped. The “Find Me Event” had more than 1,000 people playing over the course of several hours. After the success of several other streaming events, the idea of an escape room was born.
