Escape Room Difficulty
Escape Room Difficulty Levels vary depending on that company and what experience you’re playing! Every company that you visit is going to have their own way of determining the difficulty level of their escape rooms. Of course, there are still some basic guidelines: beginners should probably stay away from the highest difficulty game in the location. But how difficult are escape rooms? Keep reading to learn how we determine Escape Room Difficulty at Trap Door Escape Room and more about our individual experiences.
How We Determine Difficulty at Trap Door Escape Room
Whenever we create new experiences, a lot of thought goes into how difficult are the escape rooms. We look at several factors, including puzzles and solvability when determining the difficulty.
Puzzles
When looking at puzzles, we primarily consider the number of puzzles and the ease of solving them. The more puzzles the escape room has, the higher the difficulty will go. We also consider if puzzles require a certain amount of people to solve it. In addition, we look at the ease of solving the puzzles. Some puzzles are more complicated to solve or figure out or have multiple steps to them, which elevates the difficulty of the room.
Solvability
We also consider the escape room as a whole experience. We pay attention to the groups who have played and whether or not they completed the game in the allotted time or how far they got. This helps us understand how difficult the experience was for them.
Our Difficulty Ratings
At Trap Door Escape Room, we rank our rooms from 0 to 100, where 0 is the easiest experience and 100 is the most difficult. We hope this helps potential players understand the experience that they are getting into and how much of a challenge to expect.
However, this rating does not directly account for the fear factor, which is listed as a different stat for each game. But keep in mind that, for some people, a scarier experience can make the puzzles more challenging, especially if they’re too focused on being scared. Still, this number should help you understand our Escape Room Difficulty levels.
How "Compete" and "Play for Fun Mode" Impact Difficulty
When you choose to play an experience with us, you’ll have the option to play on either “compete” or “play for fun” mode. With compete mode, you have a maximum of 3 hints and are competing for a spot on our Leaderboard. With play for fun mode, you get unlimited hints.
Obviously, the mode you choose can affect the Escape Room’s Difficulty. Play for fun is going to be easier to solve, of course; whereas compete mode will make the experience more difficult.

History
The idea came to Tone Purzycki back in 2011 after he wrote a screenplay that developed into a live-streaming game. The game revolved around an actor trapped in a situation and the audience had to solve puzzles to figure out where he was trapped. The “Find Me Event” had more than 1,000 people playing over the course of several hours. After the success of several other streaming events, the idea of an escape room was born.
