Kids Halloween Event
Did you miss Trap Door’s second annual Trap or Treat kids Halloween event? This free indoor trick or treating experience was a huge hit in our Bartonsville and Morristown locations. Kids were able to roam the escape room in search of candy, while being led by a Gamemaster who spun a spooky story for them.
Trap or Treat Meets Zombie Apocalypse
In the Bartonsville location, this kids Halloween event took place in Cure Z.
“The plot itself is that every year, on Halloween, the zombies rise up from their graves to steal candy from all the little children. The candy is how they get their power to rise up from the grave,” said Gamemaster, Mike Parrotta. “The zombies all give most of their candy to the king zombie. It’s up to the kids and their guides to get all the candy and send the zombies to their graves.”
Parrotta played the role of a SWAT agent, while another Gamemaster, Krissy Nagy, played the role of the scientist.
“The kids had to go room to room and sweep the city clean of all candy they found. Then, they had to find the king zombie and take his candy stash to defeat them. The kids toured the Quieten lab with me and the city with Mike [Parrotta]. That’s where the king zombie was,” said Nagy. “I’d say the best part of the event was seeing how happy it made the kids.”
Kids Save the Circus in Trap or Treat
In Morristown, kids got to experience The Greatest Freakshow Escape Room in a fun and interactive way.
“The general premise of Morristown’s rendition of Trap or Treat is that there is an evil clown. He is powered by candy, running rampant through Xunder’s Freakshow,” said Callie Miller, Gamemaster. “The kids are told that if they find all the candy hidden throughout the game, they’ll defeat the clown.”
Trick-or-treaters and their parents got to go through “The Greatest Freakshow” as an interactive kids Halloween event. Though there were puzzles for the kids to complete, they were not the same as the usual adult puzzles.
“We took them through the tents of the different circus acts, where they were faced with challenges along the way,” said Kristina Malmstrom, Head of Operations. “They had to prove their strength to get into the strongman’s tent, heat up a lock to unlock the fire-breather’s trailer, and even sing a secret song in order to open up a locked chest in the evil mermaids room. It ended when they found the clown’s hideout and stole his personal candy that he hid in his shoe.”
Fun Kids Halloween Event For Parents Too
Not only did the trick-or-treaters have a blast, but the parents also enjoyed the event. They loved the alternative to outdoor trick or treating, especially since it was interactive and captured the childrens’ attention. Some of them even booked their own night out with Trap Door Escape Room.
“I think the best part of this event was that not only were the kids and parents excited about a fun, interactive, non-traditional trick-or-treating experience, but it also drove a lot of traffic to our business from a demographic I’m not sure that we reach very often – parents with young kids,” said Miller.
Some Tricks, A Lot of Treats
Children came in varied age groups, so each group enjoyed different aspects of this kids Halloween event. The older children, in Bartonsville, really enjoyed the idea of fighting the zombies. The younger kids, however, were just excited to find some candy.
“Naturally when first walking into the dark hallway, some of the children got a little scared. We were able to keep them motivated and moving through the event. They all had a fantastic time,” said Parrotta. “I think the funniest thing I got to witness was this very young girl in a princess costume who kept leading the charge for all the older kids who were too scared. When we got to the king zombie she was the first one in the room. Right before she grabbed the candy, she punched the king zombie a few times. Luckily, it’s just a dummy in a costume.”
Of course, where there are children, there is bound to be funny moments. One moment in particular stands out for the Poconos team. “Sonic the Hedgehog got scared in one group, and Winnie the Pooh was kind enough to comfort him and help him out.”
What Was The Best Part of This Kids Halloween Event?
Everyone at Trap Door Escape Room agreed that the kids’ excitement was the best part of this kids Halloween event.
Parrotta said his personal favorite moment of the event was hearing how appreciative the parents were for what we were doing. “We understand that with the pandemic, some neighborhoods want to really practice safety and social distancing, but that comes with not having a proper Halloween. While it’s good to be safe, we couldn’t stand the idea of kids having to suffer more than they already have and miss out on the holiday,” said Parrotta. “The laughter from all the kids and the gratitude from the parents really made the whole event so worth it.”

History
The idea came to Tone Purzycki back in 2011 after he wrote a screenplay that developed into a live-streaming game. The game revolved around an actor trapped in a situation and the audience had to solve puzzles to figure out where he was trapped. The “Find Me Event” had more than 1,000 people playing over the course of several hours. After the success of several other streaming events, the idea of an escape room was born.
