Escape Room Dates
By: Kristina Malmstrom
Escape rooms have quickly become an exciting, interactive form of entertainment across the nation. Groups of friends, families, and strangers have played these games and become closer by the end of the time limit. However, many fans still have questions about Escape Room Dates.
At Trap Door Escape Room, we believe Escape Room Dates are a great idea. Listed Below are just a few reasons why Escape Room Dates are great.
They're Exciting
With their daring stakes and thrilling puzzles, escape rooms are quite the exciting experience. They’re perfect for both adrenaline junkies and calm people and anyone who enjoys the concept of beating the clock. The burst of adrenaline is ideal for getting your hearts racing together on Escape Room Dates.
Plus, with the pressure of the clock, the high stakes mean you are both going to be invested in the game. This pressure is great for bonding over your excitement and enthusiasm to solve the puzzles in time in order to complete your objective.
Leave the Small Talk at the Door
Not particularly skilled at small talk? No problem! You have nothing to worry about with Escape Room Dates. You won’t have time for boring, mundane topics while you’re defusing the bomb or creating the cure for the zombie virus. In an escape room, you won’t have to worry about filling silences.
Instead, you’ll be so caught up in communicating what’s happening in the game, such as pieces of different puzzles, that you won’t need small talk to forge a connection between you and your date. You’ll be so focused on communicating the puzzles effectively that you’ll have great communication skills by the end. Plus, there’s a special bond that occurs when you’re trapped in a room together for an hour on Escape Room Dates.
Ideal for Large or Small Groups
Another perk of escape rooms is that they can easily accommodate different sized groups. For a date, this means you can go one on one, or with a group of friends for a larger experience. Of course, going with more people typically makes the experience easier.
However, sometimes it’s nice to have a one on one experience, so that you get to bond with each other. This is really a matter of preference, depending on which style date you’re more comfortable with. Trap Door Escape’s flexibility makes an ideal date for everyone. Regardless of which option is more appealing to you, you’re bound to have a fun time within each other’s company.
They're Fun
Before anything else, escape rooms are simply a form of fun entertainment. Akin to mini-golfing or bowling, they’re a fun activity that nicely lends themselves to dates. Escape rooms are typically also fairly immersive, allowing you to lose yourself within the context of the objective that you are attempting to complete.
You’ll have a blast escaping reality together, and you’ll have something interesting to talk about after the fact. Escape room dates are ideal for having a blast and making exciting memories together.
You Have to Work Together
One of the fundamental principles of escape rooms is that you’ll have to work together in order to achieve your objective. This means you’ll get to learn a lot about them as their partner in crime! For example, you’ll learn more about their style of communication, and how well the two of you are able to communicate with each other.
Besides that, you’ll get to see how well you work together to achieve a common goal. Whether or not you and your date bump heads is especially important to know for when it comes to solving real world problems, and escape rooms give you a good peak at if you’re compatible.
Of course, an escape room isn’t an absolute determination, but the skills you show and develop can be a good indicator for a budding relationship outside of the game.
They Offer Friendly Competition
Escape rooms introduce a level of healthy competition. When you are racing against the clock it’s a battle of wits and competition with no severe consequences. Instead, they introduce a healthy competition where you’re challenged to succeed but also relax and have fun with it.
However, while racing against the clock, the competition can get intense, and you’ll be able to get a glimpse of how your partner responds to this pressure. Whether the reaction is positive or negative, it’s an important trait to learn about someone.
Leave with a Feeling of Accomplishment
Or defeat- but either way, you get to share the emotion and relive it together. This is a great way to further bond with each other, as you can recall moments of the game in excitement or frustration and share the memories with each other.
Consider this more bonding after your hour of working together! Regardless, whether you win or lose, you do so together, which is a great way to connect with each other.
Take a Memorable Photo
After the game, most escape rooms have an area set up to take a photo! Usually complete with clever and funny signs and a backdrop to take a cute photographic reminder of the game and your experience.
Especially for dates, this photo serves as a nice memory that you get to take with you. Even if you lose, you should always take the photo for the sentimental keepsake.
Believe us now? Here’s some bonus Do’s and Don’ts for when you plan your date!
Do's and Don'ts for Escape Room Dates
Do Dress Comfortably
While dressing to impress is the standard for dates, you may want to scale it down a bit for escape rooms. Many have some type of physical puzzle to them, and trying to perform in formal wear simply isn’t recommended.
Don't Take It Too Seriously
Escape rooms are meant to be fun, so keep it light! Nobody wants to see their date lose their cool and rage at puzzles. Stay calm, have fun, and it’ll be a good time for all.
Don't Hog The Puzzles
Sure, you want to impress your date, but don’t do so at the expense of them not being able to help with any puzzles! Communication is key, and the best way to get through is by working together.
Do Communicate
Make sure you’re communicating all of the pieces of the puzzles you find! Your partner may understand puzzles that you don’t and vice versa, so it’s important to be open with each other.
Do Ask For Hints
Yes, you’re going to be trying to impress your date. But if you’re both stuck on one puzzle, ask for a hint! Otherwise your gameplay is going to suffer, and you won’t get as far or have as much fun.
Don't Make A Move
Whatever you do, don’t try to get it on in an escape room! Most rooms are video and audio monitored throughout, so you will get caught and likely not be able to finish the game (or return).
Don't Go For A First Date
You’re essentially locked in a room for an hour or more. Therefore, it’s probably wiser to hold off on this activity until you know you get along with a person. There’s no easy way to cut out of an escape room early, so it makes a much better second or third date option, once you know you are compatible with your date.
Do Be Positive
Even in the face of failure, wear a smile! It’ll make a much better impression on your date if you’re able to keep up the good spirits rather than complaining about how difficult or bad the experience is.
Don't Be Afraid to Lose
Escape rooms are difficult, especially if it’s only the two of you. You may lose, and that’s okay! As long as you had fun together, the date was successful!
Do Go To Dinner Afterwards
Going for dinner, lunch, or drinks after your game gives you something fun to talk about and an easy way to kick off a conversation! Discuss the puzzles, relate to each other’s feelings, and just have a good time- the date doesn’t have to be limited to the room!
Better start planning your date! You’re bound to have a great, memorable experience when you plan an escape room date. And of course, don’t forget our tips to really make the date an outstanding one!

History
The idea came to Tone Purzycki back in 2011 after he wrote a screenplay that developed into a live-streaming game. The game revolved around an actor trapped in a situation and the audience had to solve puzzles to figure out where he was trapped. The “Find Me Event” had more than 1,000 people playing over the course of several hours. After the success of several other streaming events, the idea of an escape room was born.
